7.8 Sarangani Earthquake: PINGON 3 months response snapshot

Over three months since the 7.8‑magnitude earthquake that devastated Southern Mindanao and affected more than 1.6 million people, most communities have returned to their homes. However, more than 25,000 people remain displaced across 73 evacuation centres, while 69,800 are temporarily staying with friends or relatives. The situation of displaced families has been further aggravated by heavy monsoon rains in June and July, followed by dry conditions since August.

More than two months after the 7.8‑magnitude earthquake that severely impacted Southern Mindanao, significant needs among affected populations persist, and continued support for recovery efforts remains essential. The situation of displaced families is further aggravated by ongoing monsoon rains, which trigger flooding and landslides.

Founded in 2007 to coordinate humanitarian aid among international NGOs, PINGON broadened to an inclusive membership in November 2023, recognizing local capacities and strengthening its commitment to localization, while keeping its widely recognized acronym.
